Senior Software Engineer – .NET / C#, Legacy Modernisation & Platform Transformation – Hybrid / Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk – £55,000 – £65,000

We are currently looking for a Senior Software Engineer with a strong .NET / C# background to join an established, product-focused business based in Suffolk. They have been operating successfully for 17 years with a strong customer base. However, like many established products, the technology platform has some catching up to do. This is a great opportunity for an experienced software engineer who enjoys working with established systems, solving complex technical problems and playing a key role in modernising a product that is already commercially successful.

The core platform is a legacy C# / .NET monolith, running on Windows IIS and Azure VMs, with limited observability and largely manual infrastructure. The business is now looking to pragmatically modernise the platform, evolving it towards a more modular architecture while improving performance, security, reliability and maintainability.

You will be involved in refactoring and improving older areas of the codebase, helping to reduce technical debt and improve knowledge sharing across the engineering team. You will also need to balance technical improvements with the needs of existing commercial customers, ensuring that the platform continues to deliver while being progressively improved.

Working closely with the Software Engineering Manager and Tech Lead, you will contribute to technical decisions and help establish and maintain good engineering practices across the team.

The business is also embracing AI-assisted development tools, and we are looking for someone who is positive and curious about AI while taking a thoughtful and pragmatic approach to its use.

We are looking for a strong senior engineer who can work autonomously, get stuck into difficult problems and take ownership of delivering high-quality, maintainable software.

You should be able to demonstrate experience with the following:

  • Strong C# / .NET experience working with large, established or legacy applications
  • Experience in modernising and refactoring monolithic applications towards more modular architectures to help address scalability, performance and maintainability challenges
  • Working effectively with technical debt and making pragmatic decisions about where improvements will have the greatest impact
  • Participating in code reviews and supporting less experienced engineers
  • Working collaboratively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Using modern development tools, including AI-assisted development, responsibly and effectively

We are particularly interested in engineers who enjoy improving existing systems rather than only working on greenfield projects. You should be comfortable understanding a complex codebase, identifying opportunities for improvement and making changes incrementally without unnecessarily disrupting a successful product.
