Founding Backend Engineer – TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL & AWS – Remote First from UK (New York or San Francisco) – $130,000 to $180,000 + Equity

We have a new opportunity for a Founding Backend Engineer to join a pre-seed start-up. You will be the third engineer in the team and will own significant parts of the system, building production-grade infrastructure from day one alongside the CTO / Co-Founder.

This role will involve working across the backend stack, from building API endpoints and designing database migrations, to configuring AWS infrastructure, and helping define engineering standards as the team grows.

They are looking for a product minded engineer who has experience building systems from the ground up and is not afraid to table ideas and push back constructively, contributing to architectural decisions.

The ideal candidate is a self-learner who has worked in start-up environments, is comfortable with ambiguity and rapid change, and enjoys wearing multiple hats.

Key skills, knowledge and experience required:

• You must have previous experience working in an early-stage or scaling, product-focused startup environment, ideally where you joined as one of the founding engineers
• You should have a strong background in building backend solutions using TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL and AWS (including a understanding of VPC)
• You will ideally be comfortable working with Docker, CI/CD pipelines and Terraform

Any experience (commercial or home projects) building products that work in low-connectivity environments, for example making applications function on 2G connections or designing offline-first architectures, would be a strong plus, but is a nice to have, not an essential requirement.
