Engineering Manager – SaaS, Ruby on Rails, Monolithic, Scaling – Remote (UK or Europe) – £80,000 to £90,000 or the equivalent in Euros – Ref: J105

We have a new opportunity for an Engineering Manager to join an award-winning SaaS scale-up. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Engineering, Product, Design and customer success teams, to scope out the requirements to help create outstanding products.

The tech stack is a large monolithic ecosystem composed of multiple APIs, primarily built using Ruby, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, React and AWS. They operate a Squad Model, and the Engineering Manager will be responsible for 2 of the multi-disciplined squads within the organisation.

As the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for running scrum rituals such as stand-ups, sprint planning, and retros, as well as working with the team on how tasks can be technically broken-down and achieved. Your goal is to empower the team and remove any blockers that stand in their way, whilst being a beacon of technical strength and promoting best practices.

We are looking for an engineering leader who has guided a team of Ruby on Rails engineers through the complex challenges of scaling a large monolithic system. You should have a strong understanding of both technical strategy and team execution. This includes overseeing the adoption of a modular monolith architecture to improve codebase maintainability and directing efforts around database partitioning and sharding to handle performance at scale.

Skills knowledge and experience required:

  • You must have experience or working on systems built in Ruby on Rails and understand the challenges of scaling monolithic systems
  • You must have previous experience as an Engineering Manager where you were leading and empowering 1 or 2 Agile / Scrum squads (ideally within a SaaS Start-up / Scale-up)
  • You must have come up through the ranks as a Software Engineer, and still be technical enough to challenge and have an impact in technical discussions, conduct code reviews and help with the response to critical incidents
  • You should be both plan and action oriented, with the ability to identify potential blockers early and proactively address or remove them

This is a permanent role (not a B2B contract). You can be based anywhere, but you must have full right to work in that location, and be willing to work UK hours.
